What Is IMEI Unlock?
An IMEI unlock (also called a carrier unlock or SIM unlock) removes the software restriction that ties your iPhone to a specific carrier's network. When you purchase an iPhone through a carrier on a contract or payment plan, it's typically "locked" β meaning it will only work with that carrier's SIM card.
Once unlocked, your iPhone can use any compatible SIM card from any carrier worldwide β essential for international travel, switching networks, or reselling your device at a higher value.
These are two completely different things. A carrier lock prevents using other carriers' SIM cards. An iCloud/Activation Lock prevents a new user from setting up the iPhone without the original Apple ID. Both can exist independently on the same device.
Method 1: Official Carrier Unlock (Free)
The best and always-free method is to contact your carrier directly. This is the official, Apple-approved method and results in a permanent unlock registered in Apple's database.
Requirements for a Free Carrier Unlock
- The iPhone must be fully paid off (no remaining installments)
- Your service contract must be fulfilled or expired
- The account must be in good standing (no unpaid bills)
- The device must not be reported stolen or blacklisted
- In some cases, you must have been a customer for a minimum period (e.g., 60 days)
How to Request Unlock from Major Carriers
| Carrier | Method | Wait Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | Online form / Call 611 | 2β5 days | Free |
| T-Mobile | App / Call 611 / Chat | 1β2 days | Free |
| Verizon | Auto-unlock after 60 days | Automatic | Free |
| Sprint | Call 888-211-4727 | 2β3 days | Free |
| O2 UK | Online form | 1β7 days | Free |
| EE UK | My EE app / Online | 1β3 days | Free |
| Vodafone | Online / In-store | 3β10 days | May charge Β£15 |
Method 2: Third-Party IMEI Unlock Services
If your carrier refuses to unlock your iPhone, or if you bought a used device you can't contact the original carrier about, third-party IMEI unlock services are a reliable alternative.
Many fake "unlock" sites take your money and do nothing. Legitimate services work directly with carrier databases. Never use services that ask you to install software or "jailbreak" your device β these are not real IMEI unlocks.
How Third-Party IMEI Unlock Works
- 1
Check Your IMEI
First verify your iPhone's IMEI is not blacklisted. Blacklisted devices usually cannot be unlocked through any service.
- 2
Choose a Service
Select a reputable unlock service (see comparison in our IMEI tools comparison). Enter your IMEI and carrier, and pay the fee.
- 3
Wait for Confirmation
The service submits your IMEI to Apple's unlock database. You'll receive an email when the unlock is approved β typically 1β5 business days.
- 4
Complete the Unlock
Connect your iPhone to iTunes/Finder with a new SIM inserted, or restore via iTunes to complete the unlock process.
Method 3: Contact Apple Directly
Apple itself doesn't unlock carrier-locked iPhones β that's a carrier responsibility. However, Apple Support can help in specific situations:
- If you bought an iPhone directly from Apple and it came locked (rare)
- If there's a database error preventing an unlock
- If your carrier has gone out of business
Contact Apple Support at support.apple.com and explain your situation. They may facilitate the unlock on your behalf.
How to Complete the Unlock on Your iPhone
Once you receive confirmation that your IMEI unlock is approved:
- Insert a SIM card from the new carrier
- Connect your iPhone to a computer running the latest version of iTunes (Windows) or Finder (macOS Catalina+)
- iTunes/Finder should display: "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked."
- Alternatively, a simple restart with the new SIM inserted may complete the unlock automatically
Once your IMEI is unlocked and registered in Apple's database, the unlock is permanent. It survives iOS updates, factory resets, and device restores. You never need to repeat the process.
Troubleshooting Common Unlock Issues
"iPhone is not eligible for unlock" Error
This usually means the device is still under contract or payment plan, has an outstanding balance, or has been reported lost/stolen. Contact your carrier to resolve the issue before attempting an unlock.
Unlock Approved but iPhone Still Shows Locked
Try these steps: (1) Restart the iPhone with the new SIM inserted, (2) Connect to iTunes/Finder and check for the unlock message, (3) Back up and restore the iPhone via iTunes β this forces Apple's servers to push the unlock status.
Find My iPhone Preventing Activation
Note: A carrier unlock does NOT remove iCloud Activation Lock. If the previous owner's Apple ID is still on the device, it will still require their credentials after a carrier unlock. Always verify FMI status with an IMEI check before purchasing a used iPhone.
